MORE SAFETY IN WINTER SPORTS

They are increasingly conquering the slopes - protective equipment for the upper body and other areas at risk of injury. This is not a passing fad, but rather protectors provide important services. They cushion violent impacts. Depending on the model, they protect against serious injuries to the shoulder, spine or hip, as well as the thighs or arms. The more sporty and hard you ski, the more important it is to wear protectors. The most important are the back protectors, which protect your spine. You can also get protectors for your shoulders, hips and other parts of your body. There are also models where the back protector also functions as a backpack.

Protective equipment like this is particularly important for ski racing, freeriding off-piste and in the fun park. Since children are particularly at risk of falling, we not only have men's and women's models in our range, but also special protectors for young junior skiers.

WHAT YOU SHOULD LOOK OUT FOR

Protective equipment for winter sports must comply with the European standard EN1621-2. You will find a reference to this on the packaging and the test mark can also be found on the protector itself. All safety products offered in our range automatically meet the criteria of this EU standard. The fit is very important. If the protector does not fit correctly, it can slip in the event of a fall and no longer work properly. You should therefore pay close attention to the size specifications before ordering.

Most protective waistcoats are worn as a second layer of clothing. It is therefore best to try on the protectors with thick ski underwear. You will also feel whether you like the comfort when trying on the vest. If the product does not meet your requirements, send it back and exchange it for another protector.

VARIOUS TYPES OF SKI BACK PROTECTORS

There are three different types of back protectors. Comfortable are the protector waistcoats with integrated pads. These are made of a relatively soft cushioning material called soft protectors. The waistcoats are comfortable to wear and hardly restrict freedom of movement. Since the waistcoats warm the body, you may even save a layer of clothing. As a normal skier, one waistcoat should be enough. If you count yourself among the snow park artists and racers, then hard shell protectors are certainly the better choice. The firm plastic armour can even withstand the sharp tip of a ski pole. You strap the protector to your torso with the help of a chest and hip strap. Freeriders prefer the practical protector backpacks. The protective plates are integrated directly into the backpack.

TIME FOR A NEW BACK PROTECTOR

If you don't have any protective equipment yet, but like to be on the slopes often, it's worth buying a protector. Violent impacts after heavy falls shorten the life of your protective equipment. After an accident, you should therefore also buy a new protector. Due to the ageing process, it is also advisable to replace the protectors every five to six years.

If you want to enjoy your protective equipment for a long time, it is best not to store it in the car overnight. The freezing cold can damage the plastic. But remember: Not only the protective effect should influence the purchase, but also the general handling. Make sure that the actual protectors can be easily removed from the waistcoat and reinserted. This makes cleaning easier.

THE ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF PROTECTORS

With suitable protective equipment, you will definitely be safer on the slopes and in open terrain, and you will be protected against blunt injuries or punctures in falls. Especially for the sensitive spine, back protectors offer additional support and stability. It has been proven that protectors significantly reduce the risk of injury. Nevertheless, there are winter sports enthusiasts who find the protectors uncomfortable and therefore do without the protective "turtle shell".

ADVANTAGES:

    • Minimise the risk of injury in the event of a fall.
    • modern models are breathable and moisture-regulating
    • comfortable seat and good fit
    • depending on the model, can be used as a substitute for clothing

DISADVANTAGES:

    • Restriction of freedom of movement
    • especially the back protectors are often perceived as disturbing

PROTECT YOUR BACK AND SPINE AT ALL COSTS
