OPTIMUM PROTECTION AGAINST THE WIND AND BAD WEATHER

THE CORE ELEMENT OF ALL GORE-TEX® PRODUCTS: THE MEMBRANE

The central element of all GORE-TEX® products is the GORE-TEX® membrane, which is located on the inside of the garment and is not visible from the outside. The material provides lasting waterproofing, complete windproofing, good breathability and top comfort. But how does it work? The pores in the membrane are the essential piece of the puzzle.
The material is windproof because the air volume that passes through a square metre of fabric per second is just 5.0. The pores are also 20,000 times smaller than a drop of water, which means that water can't penetrate the fabric from the outside. However small these pores are, however, they're still 700 times larger than a water vapour molecule, so evaporating perspiration has no trouble escaping the garment.
Depending on its use, the membrane can be combined with different fabric layers and reinforced. An insulating layer can be added to it for extra warmth.

CONSTRUCTIONS

Technologies are being continually developed and perfected to adapt materials to specific uses. That's why there are various different ways of processing the GORE-TEX® membrane. In order to turn the materials into a product, you need special machines and know-how, which is why GORE-TEX® materials are only sold to and processed at certified processing facilities.
2-layer construction: where the GORE-TEX® membrane is only actually attached to the outer material of a garment. The separate lining offers additional comfort.
3-layer construction: where the GORE-TEX® membrane is attached to both the outer fabric layer and the lining. This prevents the layers from moving against one another, thus increasing garment durability.
Z-liner construction: where the GORE-TEX® membrane is attached to a lightweight carrier material that sits loose between the outer material and the lining. The seams are not as tightly taped in this case, so manufacturers have a greater range of design options for the garment.

VERSATILE USES

GORE-TEX® is used in a whole host of products: clothes, shoes and gloves. There exist different fabrics for different sports and extreme conditions:
Apart from versatile GORE-TEX®, there's a material specially made for windy conditions like bike riding, GORE-TEX® Windstopper, and yet another for extremely low temperatures, the highly insulated GORE THERMIUM. It's recommended to wear a breathable baselayer with excellent moisture management under GORE-TEX® garments - think synthetic fibre or merino wool products.

GORE-TEX INFINIUM

For those days when maximum performance and strong, functional companions are required, but waterproof protection is not essential, there is GORE-TEX INFINIUM. Products with this technology are designed for comfort, light weight and thin insulation. Used in jackets, shoes, and gloves, GORE-TEX INFINIUM is made for both strenuous, outdoor sports activities and the daily cycle to work. Breathability and a lightweight feel provide performance where waterproof protection is not important.

GORE MICRO GRID LINER TECHNOLOGY

GORE-TEX® has developed a lining fabric with innovative properties that have led to its pending patent - it doesn't wear down, it doesn't pull, it's highly breathable and it's very light.
Care tips: GORE-TEX® garments are best washed with liquid detergent. Powder detergent doesn't rinse out completely and can block the membrane's pores. In turn, this reduces the material's functionality. It's also recommended to not use fabric softener.

GORE-TEX® SHOE TECHNOLOGIES

GORE-TEX® technologies aren't just used in clothes, of course, as they also bring all kinds of benefits when used in shoes. GORE-TEX® shoes keep your feet dry in all weathers and guarantee a comfortable skin temperature thanks to optimum breathability.

THE TECHNOLOGY'S ACTIVE PRINCIPLE: HEAT LOSS PREVENTION

The best way to achieve a comfortable skin temperature is to protect your body's microclimate - the paper-thin protective layer of air just above your skin. Your microclimate's worst enemy is heat loss, which can occur in three different ways: first, cold wind destroys the microclimate and draws heat from the body - the so-called Windchill effect. Second, water on the skin evaporates, causing the body to cool down. To prevent this, clothes need to allow evaporated perspiration to escape straight away, so none of it remains on the skin after you've finished exercising. Third, wet clothes can quickly draw heat away from the body, which is why it's preferable to wear fast-drying materials. GORE-TEX garments combat all three types of heat loss.
