The skis and snowshoes are stored and with the end of spring we will be back on foot in the local mountains on outdoor tours. Keller Sports Pro Lisa has tested the Mammut Ducan Mid GTX hiking boots and the Mammut Ducan Spine hiking backpack. In her test report she explains why Mammut outdoor equipment is perfectly suited for the first tours in 2020.
The Mammut Ducan Mid GTX hiking boot
Most hikes are already well feasible without large snowfields. However, the melted snow often leaves slushy and wet trails behind. Therefore, waterproof hiking boots are indispensable for me, especially during the transition period. The Mammut Ducan Mid hiking boots are equipped with the GTX membrane and are therefore also suitable for outdoor activities in inconsistent weather.
Two technologies for safety and comfort
Mammut's Georganic 3D Technology supports natural movement when hiking and offers a high level of wearing comfort. Even on longer tours with a lot of luggage, you always maintain an upright posture, which allows efficient and energy-saving hiking. The integrated spring steel sole and the Vibram® Outsole prevent the foot from bending at small climbing points and provide a firm hold on the rock.
I use the stable Mammut Ducan Mid GTX hiking boots for longer hikes in alpine terrain. The reason for this is, on the one hand, that a half-height shoe prevents the boot from twisting even when tired and, on the other hand, it covers the requirements for most types of terrain. On demanding paths or scree fields, you are perfectly equipped with the stable Mammut Ducan Mid GTX. With its 430g (5.5 UK) a lightweight, which nevertheless proves itself in alpine terrain and is also particularly comfortable to wear.
The Mammut Ducan Spine 28-35l hiking backpack
No compromises when it comes down to it - for safety's sake, a down jacket for the summit, yes or no? The Mammut Ducan Spine takes this decision off your shoulders: with its adjustable volume of 28-35l, you have a large packing space. This makes the volume of the outdoor rucksack suitable for medium-difficulty hikes and also for multi-day tours in the mountains with a lot of luggage.
As you would expect from the manufacturer Mammut, everything has been well thought out: an integrated rain cover, large access compartments and a hydration system are just a few of the features this hiking backpack offers.
Unleash your spine
Everybody who has ever had a packed 35L backpack on a tour knows how exhausting it can be to climb 1000 meters in altitude. To compensate for the weight and the constant pressure on the upper body, Mammut has found a suitable solution: The Active Spine Technology.
This back system is not rigidly attached to the backpack, but the support points at the shoulders and hips are connected to each other by a movable fibreglass rod. Thanks to this feature, the backpack adapts to the natural anatomy with every movement and offers maximum freedom of movement.
The spine is actively used and the back does not tire even after longer tours. Mammut is a pioneer in this technology and once you have a backpack with Spine Technology, you will not want to do without it.
My all-rounder for outdoor sports
I was allowed to test the Mammut hiking backpack on a long weekend. Among other things I went for sport climbing, hiking and on a high altitude tour. Even though the backpack is intended for trekking tours, the Mammut Ducan Spine has proven to be the all-rounder for all outdoor sports for me.
The quick lacing system with its numerous fastening options has proved particularly successful. A jacket, climbing part, ice axe or trekking pole can be attached to the rucksack quickly and easily and the tour can continue. The zipper is also practical, which extends over the entire back. This allows quick access if you need equipment such as crampons or change of clothes.
I was also positively surprised by the total weight of the hiking backpack. At 1400g, the Mammut Ducan Spine is 700g lighter than the two high altitude models Mammut Trea and Mammut Trion with Active Spine technology.
Functionality and style - urbaneering
With the Mammut Ducan Spine, Mammut has launched a backpack with an unusual and new design. The closure stands out from the wide range of outdoor rucksacks because it can be rolled up or sideways. It also has a zipper on the inside. The backpack is available in three simple but modern colours, which means that the Mammut Ducan Spine can also be used in everyday life.
With the Mammut Ducan Mid GTX hiking boot, you are perfectly equipped for every outdoor tour. The outdoor shoes offer comfort, stability and grip on a variety of surfaces. The waterproof GTX membrane perfectly rounds off the all-round performance of the Mammut Ducan Mid GTX hiking boots.
The Mammut Ducan Spine hiking rucksack is a robust rucksack for outdoor activities or as a stylish companion in everyday life. Thanks to the Active Spine technology, it is comfortable to carry even at higher weights and on longer tours and has many practical features. Pack it up and off you go!
