The temperatures in the alpine valleys will become warmer and the last snow fields from winter will disappear at higher altitudes. The start of the hiking season has begun. Right on time Keller Sports Pro Markus had the opportunity to test the new HANWAG Banks GTX.
About the HANWAG Banks GTX hiking boots
The Banks has been a HANWAG classic for over 15 years. The hiking boot now offers even more space in the forefoot area, making it a very comfortable and high-quality companion for long hikes or easy hut tours in low mountain ranges. The HANWAG Banks is now also available as Banks SF Extra GTX version with a StraightFit last for men and women.
Additionally for women also in the Banks Narrow GTX version with extra narrow lasts. You can also choose between a waterproof Gore-Tex membrane or a supple leather lining. So everyone can find a suitable outdoor shoe from the HANWAG Banks family.
HANWAG relies on the proven soles from Vibram for the Banks. This ensures optimum grip and safety on the hiking trails. The running sole in combination with the improved PU heel wedge offers very good cushioning and a pleasant rolling motion. This, in combination with the wider forefoot area, makes the shoe pleasant and comfortable to wear even on very long hikes. Thanks to the heel box, the Banks still offers enough support, even when the trails become more demanding.
The shaft of the HANWAG Banks GTX has been reworked and upgraded in order to guarantee excellent comfort with best stability. HANWAG achieves this through the choice of high quality materials. The HANWAG Banks GTX is made of nubuck leather, which is certified and manufactured exclusively in Europe. The local company from Vierkirchen near Munich designs and produces its outdoor product range exclusively within Europe.
A durable function and stability of the lacing hooks is guaranteed by a metal casting process. To maintain the functionality of the hiking boots for a long time, the upper material is sewn with internal stitch-and-turn seams.
How does the HANWAG Banks GTX feel while hiking?
For my first hike with the Banks, I chose a day hike in the Tennengebirge, right in front of my front door. After unpacking and the first inspection, the hiking boot makes a very solid and high quality optical impression. As soon as I put on the hiking boots I noticed the freedom in the toe area. As I often have problems with shoes that are too tight, this was a real moment of happiness for me.
The first steps are fun and you hardly feel the shoes. Since it had rained the day before, I was very happy about the waterproof Gore-Tex membrane. Even in high wet grass they kept my feet dry. After a while I left the alpine meadows behind me and reached the stony, rugged terrain of the Tennengebirge. Even on the gravel paths and on rocks the HANWAG Banks GTX makes a good impression.
The Virbam sole gives the trekking boots an excellent grip and this gives you a lot of confidence when climbing over steep rock faces. Once you reach the summit you don't even notice the boots and that's a good thing. No pressing, rubbing or other discomfort. After a short rest we head back towards the valley. The HANWAG Banks GTX with the improved PU heel wedge can score here as well.
Even if you want to take a quick step down the valley, or even walk small stages, your hiking boots will do the trick. The soles also show good rolling behaviour on a rapid descent and adhere to the ground. In contrast to a trail running shoe, with the HANWAG Banks GTX you don't have to be afraid of lateral rock contact.
The foot is well protected by the durable upper material and the high shaft. Back at the starting point, I was fully convinced of the fit. Still no pressure or sore toes. The tour with the hiking shoe was really fun.
