Our running partner ASICS recently launched the latest model of one of the brand’s most popular running shoe lines: the ASICS GEL Kayano 25. We now have this running shoe available in our shop and would like to tell you everything you need to know about the new GEL Kayano. What’s changed? What technologies has ASICS used for the GEL Kayano?
We’d also like to give you a better insight into the brand ASICS - where does it come from? What does ASICS mean? What makes the brand’s running shoes special?
ASICS GEL Kayano 25: the new running shoe
One of the main points of focus when designing the ASICS GEL Kayano 25 was protecting the foot. True to the motto of "Protection Perfected", ASICS has launched a running shoe that guarantees a stable, protected run. Every step is due to be harmonious and gentle, which is why ASICS has equipped the new GEL Kayano 25 with improved lightweight cushioning. The combination of FlyteFoam and FlyteFoam Propel technology enables you to run for longer while feeling lighter and more powerful.
ASICS GEL Kayano 25: the technologies
The FlyteFoam Lyte midsole material was developed by the ASICS Institute of Sports Science in Kobe, Japan. It is extremely light yet it offers excellent cushioning and is reinforced with carbon fibres. These fibres ensure the material quickly springs back into its original shape after every heel strike. This means that you benefit from soft cushioning and a dynamic push-off phase mile after mile.
FlyteFoam Propel technology is particularly good for powerful push-off phases. It's made of highly responsive elastomer and will lend every step an extra push forward. Both of the technologies we’ve mentioned are new in the ASICS GEL Kayano 25. The previous version of the shoe came with a slightly heavier FlyteFoam midsole. Nonetheless, the sports brand has chosen to keep the ASICS GEL element in the heel the same in the latest model so as to offer runners additional cushioning.
The upper of the ASICS GEL Kayano 25 is made of double-layer Jacquard mesh, which is breathable and delivers a perfect fit, keeping your foot cool and comfortable and ready for some extra miles. The stability of the foot is also improved, thanks to the external heel counter. All in all, the new ASICS GEL Kayano 25 is a high-tech running shoe that’s just as suited to 5k jogs as it is to marathons.
ASICS GEL Kayano 25 - tested by Daniela Ryf
Proof that the new Kayano 25 is suited for long-distance runs is in Daniela Ryf’s testimonial. She’s one of only four women ever to become threetimes IRONMAN World Champions. She’s had to deal with a lot of injuries in the past, which is why Ryf has fallen in love with the new GEL Kayano 25. The shoe is gentle on the body and protects it, delivering a stable run that pushes you forward with every step. The technologically improved new model is a clear sign that ASICS continues to develop its GEL Kayano range. Every version of the shoe, from the first to the twenty-fifth model, has proven to be a better, faster, more stable and more protective running shoe than its predecessor.
The brand Onitsuka Co. was founded in 1949 by Kihachiro Onitsuka, from Japan. At the time, he made trainers for schoolchildren, as this kind of shoe was hard to find after the war. He soon took the Latin saying “anima sana in corpore sano”, which means much more than just “healthy mind in a healthy body”, and adopted it as his company philosophy. This went on to become the acronym ASICS and the new name of the brand. ASICS is the embodiment of a healthy lifestyle - when the body is healthy, so is the mind. This is probably another reason why the new ASICS GEL Kayano 25 was designed to protect your body while running. The roots of the company are also reflected in other ways, such as Onitsuka Tiger, the sneaker range by ASICS, named after the founder of the company.
The first ASICS footwear designed for sports was actually basketball shoes, but it didn’t take long for the label to move into the running market. ASICS’ breakthrough came a good 30 years ago when it developed GEL cushioning. The GEL cushions were (and still are) applied in those places in the shoe that come under the most pressure during a run. The easiest way to recognise an ASICS running shoe these days is by the visible GEL cushion in the sole. These GEL inserts are just one of the special features of ASICS running shoes. The Institute of Sports Science in Kobe, Japan, is constantly working on developing new and improved technologies to make running shoes lighter, faster and more comfortable.
