THE NORTH FACE: FROM THE BEACH TO THE MOUNTAINS
Douglas "Doug" Tompkins was an avid mountaineer, skier, hiker and kayaker from California - the state that actually stands for palms, beach and "Surfin' USA". As chance would have it, Tompkins made his first entrepreneurial steps as a mountaineering equipment store owner on the northern beach of San Francisco. In 1966 he outgrew his small business and moved on to Berkeley, where he and his wife Susie founded the mountain sports brand The North Face. The eponymous North Face is commonly known as the most demanding side of a mountain and equally popular and feared by mountaineers. The silhouette of the Half Dome, a mountain in the Yosemite National Park legendary among climbers, served as inspiration for the world-famous TNF logo.

THE NORTH FACE PRODUCTS: NECESSITY INSTEAD OF LUXURY
Tompkins, who also created the fashion label "Esprit" in the 60s, was a pragmatist, didn't think much of the "technical gimmicks and gimmicks" of other sporting goods manufacturers, as he himself said. He wanted to create products that were above all one thing: Functional. His promise: "I offer all mountain sports enthusiasts appropriate and practical clothing". As people in an increasingly industrialized world increasingly fled more and more to untouched places, Tompkins hit a nerve at the time. The Outdoor outerwear like jackets, rain jackets, sweatshirts or trousers quickly became very popular. Synthetic fibres of various types helped to develop and expand the high-quality range, which now also includes shoes, tents, sleeping bags and backpacks.
Of course, it was also important to find new inspiration for outdoor products, and so the North Face (TNF) became known early on for sponsoring expeditions to the most remote areas of the world, in which the company also participated itself. The North Face has honored its slogan "Never stop exploring" and has launched numerous expeditions. In 1990, The North Face Team climbed K2 - at 8611 meters the second highest mountain in the world. The team did without your use of artificial oxygen. 1998 followed a several days climbing tour to the Great Sail Peaks on Baffin Island. These expeditions developed into a true community and even today The North Face regularly organizes events where outdoor enthusiasts can experience nature in a very special way. For example at the Mountain Festival at the foot of the Eiger or until 2018 at the Lavaredo Ultra Trail.
The latest technology from The North Face was also created to satisfy a need. The TNF athletes had wished for a jacket on their various outdoor activities that would not have to be put on and taken off all the time to adapt to the weather conditions. The North Face heard the wish and made it come true. In October 2019, the brand launched the new TNF Futurelight collection. A material that is thinner and lighter and at the same time even more breathable than anything comparable on the market. Also waterproof and windproof, making it perfect for any outdoor adventure. The following applies: stagnation is a step backwards. Together with Primaloft, The North Face has developed an alternative to the classic goose down that provides the wearer with the best possible protection against moisture and cold. The Thermoball technology guarantees that the heat generated by the body is stored in small air pockets and does not escape to the outside. This keeps you dry on your expeditions and allows you to concentrate on the essentials - according to the motto "there is no bad weather, only bad clothing": Discovering. Because you have the weather under control!
