Gary Burrell and Dr. Min Kao worked together for the aerospace and automotive giant AlliedSignal before the two technology-enthusiastic academics decided to establish their own company in 1989. The company name was composed of the first three letters of the two founders' first names ("Gar-Min"), and Garmin initially settled in Olathe in the US state of Kansas.

The navigation device specialists subsequently moved their headquarters first to Taiwan, then to the Cayman Islands in 2000, and ten years later to Schaffhausen in Switzerland. Throughout the many moves, however, the operational heart remained in Olathe, where Burrell and Kao are still active today. Sticking to their roots, as it were, they and their employees concentrated primarily on the manufacture of robust navigation devices for the maritime and aviation industries.

Burrell and Kao, however, did not only want to serve the mentioned sectors with their products, but to let the whole world participate in their know-how. While little attention was paid to the outdoor sector and the associated navigation devices for cars, Garmin soon entered the "public" sector without neglecting maritime and aviation. Garmin also stands for high-quality electronics there, and has received several awards.

The Americans gradually specialized in pedestrian navigation as well. In addition, the technology company still produces sophisticated bike computers today. Fitness trackers and smartwatches from Garmin are particularly popular among runners. The watches and devices from the Vivosport and Vivosmart series as well as the running watches from the Forerunner product line are particularly well-known here. So: Whether on the water, in the air or on the ground - with Garmin, everyone finds their way.
