Product developer Peter Turner and freeride ski designer Stephan Drake from Salt Lake City in the US are the brains behind the DPS brand. Their passion involves assessing traditional equipment in ski sports and testing new products. Their goal is to take ski sports to a higher level. The two friends were the first entrepreneurs worldwide to produce a range of carbon fibre skis. The successful duo developed the first sidecut rocker skis and 120mm powder pintail. In addition to a healthy dose of pioneering spirit, DPS' secrets to success also include creativity, high-quality carbon technology and an oustanding shape.
DPS was founded in 2005 when Stephan Drake became fed up of riding in deep powder with inadequate skis. He looked for the perfect ski and envied the snowboarders in South America who were able to effortlessly enjoy their sport in deep powder. While Stephan was still using traditionally camber-shaped skis, snowboarders were benefiting from rocker-style boards with a raised tail and tip. Inspired by this knowledge he set about developing the perfect ski and launched his company DPS - an abbreviation for Drake Powderworks. From then on the company began producing robust, rigid and lightweight, perfectly shaped powder skis made from carbon fibre.
The Salt Lake City company at the foot of the Wasatch Range manufactures its skis in the freeride eldorado US state of Utah. Planned innovations are quickly implemented. The ski professionals can just as quickly reach the Park City and Alta ski resorts to test out their products. The classic Wailer range was developed in Salt Lake City for all piste use. Models suitable for touring such as the Cassiar were also specially developed here and tested for their suitability.
DPS has its own professional team of top international athletes - the so-called DPS Koalas. The Koalas include people such as Olof Larsson and Piers Solomon. Olof Larsson is of Swedish origin. Previously an alpine racer he was introduced to freeriding by his brother which he now practices professionally. Piers Solomon on the other hand is a backcountry and big mountain skiers from Switzerland. He also began his career as an alpine racer at the tender age of six years old. He learned to value the freedom that freeskiing had to offer and advanced further and further to become a deep powder enthusiast.
