THE BIGGEST ADVANTAGES OF CYCLING SHORTS

The most comfortable place for long sessions is not the bicycle saddle. The pressure. The longer you ride, the more it increases. That's why cycling shorts have special pads made of gel or foam that relieve the pressure where you rest directly on the saddle. This increases comfort. At the same time, cycling shorts are made of functional materials that do not absorb moisture and protect body heat more effectively when it is cold.

This keeps your muscles warm for longer, even on long tours. At the same time, cycling shorts are cut in such a way that they follow your movements on the bike willingly and do not cause any pressure points. Models with straps also ensure a constant fit - even if the tour is a little more intense.

WHAT TYPES OF CYCLING SHORTS ARE THERE

Mountain bikes have different requirements than road bikes, changing temperatures confront you with different conditions than constant heat. The range in our cycling shorts shop at Keller Sports is correspondingly versatile:

  • Shorts are mainly worn on mountain bikes. They are cut wider than the traditionally very tight-fitting shorts for road bikes and therefore offer space for protectors. Robust materials protect you from the pitfalls of the trail: from branches or tree trunks and from falls, while reinforcements on the inner thighs prevent chafing. Shorts have an inner short. However, they are usually removable so that you can combine them with functional cycling pants. There are thermal models for winter.
  • Short tights have a close-fitting cut and are made of elastic materials, allowing you to move freely in the saddle. At the same time, the body-hugging cut reduces air resistance and thus favours higher speeds or saves energy on long tours. Short tights, as the name suggests, end above the knee. They have reinforcements at the crotch and inner thighs and therefore chafe less quickly than conventional shorts.
  • Tights hardly differ from short tights in terms of their basic setup. They also fit tightly, are made of elastic materials and are therefore particularly suitable for road cycling. You will also find reinforcements on the inside and in the crotch. The main difference is the length. Tights are available in both 3/4 and full lengths, so they can accompany you on tours on colder days.
  • Bib tights have straps and therefore no waistband. This ensures that your cycling shorts do not permanently slip or cut in, which in turn increases freedom of movement. On cold days, bib shorts also protect the kidneys, while in hot weather you can wear them without a cycling jersey thanks to the straps.

CYCLING SHORTS: WHAT MATERIALS ARE AVAILABLE?

Different materials ensure that you can adapt your cycling shorts as precisely as possible to your tours. Some models are more robust, others more elastic. Some are more breathable, others more water-repellent:

  • Polyester: Especially when cycling shorts need to be particularly functional and robust at the same time, manufacturers turn to polyester. Especially as the material stores heat well and, despite its durability, wicks moisture to the outside.
  • Polyamide: If a pair of cycling trousers is to repel water, the material from which the first nylon tights were made is used. This is made possible by its dense structure. Polyamide is also robust and dries quickly. Since breathability suffers, other materials are mixed in. Despite the high elasticity of polyamide, cycling shorts often use elastane.
  • Nylon is extremely tear-resistant, breathable and functional at the same time and is therefore ideal for cycling shorts. However, the material does not have water-repellent properties and therefore needs an additional coating if in doubt.
  • Lightweight, functional, easy-care: cycling trousers usually have to fulfil several tasks at once. Mixed fabrics are therefore not uncommon. Many models are both breathable and robust, functional and pleasantly light. Spandex, for example, provides the necessary stretch, especially in road cycling shorts.

WHAT ARE THE PROPERTIES OF CYCLING TROUSERS?

Breathable or waterproof? With a zip? With pockets? Different cycling shorts have different properties. Here is an overview of the features of the premium products from the Keller Sports cycling shorts store:

  • Tight cycling shorts do not have pockets. They would only get in the way. Instead, you can stow energy bars and perhaps your keys in the jersey. Shorts for mountain biking often have zipped side pockets.
  • Bib shorts in particular create a small hurdle when you have to go to the toilet. Some manufacturers therefore offer models for women with all-round zips at the hips. Men often use bib shorts with front zips.
  • Compression shorts are particularly tight-fitting. This promotes blood circulation, stimulates the muscles and delays fatigue. Compression also helps with regeneration.
  • Breathability: Cycling shorts are designed to prevent heat from collecting between the fabric and the skin. However, waterproof models offer slightly less breathability than other models.
  • Moisture transport: Function as a central task. Thanks to suitable materials, cycling shorts draw perspiration away from the skin and thus ensure a good body climate. In addition, the trousers prevent the legs from cooling down.
  • Thermal cycling shorts: Especially on tours in winter, you need more intensive thermal insulation. Thermal materials keep your legs warm, yet remain breathable.
  • Reflectors on cycling shorts are particularly useful if you often ride at dusk or even in the dark. They increase visibility.
  • Waterproof and/or windproof cycling shorts offer somewhat less breathability, but they keep your legs dry or warm in intense showers and strong gusts.
  • Inner shorts or nets are mainly available in wider cut bike shorts. They often have an additional seat pad. At the same time, you can remove them to wear your cycling shorts with matching functional pants.
  • With/without straps: They are not necessary, but valuable. You can get cycling shorts with or without straps. Variant number one, however, gives more support and prevents friction more effectively.
  • With/without seat pad: Even if not every model has one, a seat pad is always recommended. It reduces pressure on the buttocks and seat bones and makes long tours more comfortable.
  • Seamless cycling shorts reduce the risk of friction and the resulting open spots. A pleasant effect, especially on long tours

HOW SHOULD CYCLING SHORTS FIT?

Since you usually spend several hours in the saddle, your cycling shorts must fit as perfectly as possible at all times. They should be tight, but never too tight.

Why are cycling shorts so tight?

While MTB shorts have a slightly wider cut, road cycling shorts are like a second skin. This is how they best support movement in the saddle and don't flap in the wind. However, they should never constrict or even cut in.

What do you wear under cycling shorts?

There is no one final solution. Since cycling shorts fit tightly, many bikers choose not to wear additional pants. But it is possible. In that case, however, use a pair of close-fitting functional pants.

Freedom of movement

To prevent your sweaty legs from sliding up when you pedal, many cycling shorts have silicone cuffs. This does not restrict your freedom of movement. Especially if the trousers fit tightly, but not too tightly. You avoid pressure points. They should also not cut in at any point.

Prevent friction

There is little more unpleasant than feeling a chafing pain halfway through your ride. Tight-fitting cycling shorts are one way to prevent this. Also make sure that the seams are as flat as possible, or even non-existent. This also prevents friction.

Bib shorts vs. cycling shorts without straps

There are two advantages to cycling shorts with straps: on the one hand, they prevent slipping, and on the other, they provide additional protection for the kidneys by keeping them warmer.

THE BEST CYCLING SHORTS FOR EVERY SEASON

Heat. Cold. Changing temperatures and conditions. You can find the right cycling shorts for every season in our cycling shorts sale online.

Cycling shorts for winter

In the cold season, the perfect cycling shorts should keep your legs warm while offering breathability. Long thermal models are therefore a good choice. For better visibility, you can also use trousers with reflectors.

Cycling shorts for summer

When temperatures rise, good cycling shorts effectively wick moisture away from the skin and are lightweight and breathable. Suspenders prevent them from slipping back and forth.

Cycling shorts for the transitional period

In the changeable weather of autumn and spring, your cycling shorts should be able to keep out the wind while remaining breathable. Long models without thermal inserts are a good choice here.

HOW (OFTEN) DO YOU WASH CYCLING SHORTS?

Since they often come into direct contact with the skin, you should clean your cycling shorts after every ride. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the label. In the machine, use as few revolutions as possible when spinning, and use liquid or functional detergent. You should not use washing powder or fabric softener to keep the trousers in optimal condition. A hygienic cleaner also prevents the formation of bacteria and odours.
